Most trading journals track too little or the wrong things entirely. Here is exactly what every trade entry needs, why each field matters, and why the best traders have stopped filling them in manually.
The Template
Every field below has a specific purpose. Together they create a record that surfaces patterns no spreadsheet can reveal manually.
Trade Notes
Clean break above the 09:00 consolidation with strong volume on the 5m. Held through the first pullback as planned. Closed at TP1 — should have let it run to TP2 based on the structure. Review exit rules for trend days.
Why Each Field Matters
Remove any one of these and you lose the ability to answer a specific question about your trading.
Date & Time
Reveals session patterns. When you trade matters as much as how you trade — many traders consistently underperform at specific times without ever realising it.
Symbol
Every instrument behaves differently. Without per-symbol data you cannot see that you have a real edge on EUR/USD and a consistent loss on GBP/JPY.
Direction (Long/Short)
Identifies directional bias. Some traders win consistently long but give it back going short. This split is invisible without tracking direction explicitly.
Lot Size
Context for P&L. A $500 win on a 0.1 lot and a $500 win on a 2.0 lot represent completely different risk profiles. Lot size makes the number meaningful.
Entry & Exit Price
The foundation of every other calculation — RR, pips, P&L. Inaccurate prices produce inaccurate analysis. Automated sync eliminates entry errors entirely.
Risk / Reward
The most important ratio in trading. Actual RR versus planned RR tells you whether your exits are as disciplined as your entries — most traders are shocked by the gap.
Setup / Playbook
Makes strategies comparable. Without tagging trades to setups you cannot distinguish between a bad day and a bad setup — they look identical in raw P&L.
Notes & Tags
The human layer. Numbers explain what happened. Notes explain why — the market context, your reasoning, your mistakes. This is where improvement actually happens.
The Real Problem
It is not a discipline problem. It is a design problem. Manual journaling creates friction that compounds until the journal is abandoned.
Manual journal
Spreadsheet or journal app.
Tracker Fx
Automatic journal.
From Data to Decisions
Tracker Fx captures every field automatically — then turns the data into insights that actually change how you trade.
Every field in the template is captured automatically when you connect cTrader, Bybit, MT4 or MT5. Date, symbol, direction, price, lot size, RR, P&L — all synced without you touching anything.
Tag trades to your setups and Tracker Fx calculates win rate, profit factor and average RR per strategy. See which setups are worth trading and which ones to cut — backed by real data.
Journal entries are automatically grouped by session — London, New York, Asian or custom windows. Find when your edge is strongest without any manual sorting or pivot tables.
All journal entries grouped and analysed by instrument. See which symbols you have a real edge on and which ones are costing you — without building a single formula.
Add notes and custom tags directly in Tracker Fx. The human context that completes the data picture — searchable, filterable and linked to every individual trade in your journal.
Win rate, profit factor and expectancy tracked month by month across all your journal entries. See whether your trading is improving, declining or flat — and act on the data.

What changes when you have complete, accurate data on every trade you have ever taken.
"I had a spreadsheet journal for two years. I filled it in maybe 40% of the time. When I connected Tracker Fx I had every trade from the first day — accurate, complete, zero effort. I finally had data I could actually trust."
"The setup tagging changed everything. I had three strategies and assumed they all worked roughly the same. Two had positive profit factors. One had 0.6. I would never have known without the breakdown."
"I used to dread reviewing my trades because it meant hours in a spreadsheet. Now my journal updates automatically and I spend that time actually analysing — not entering data that should never have been manual in the first place."
FAQ
A complete trading journal entry should include: date and time, symbol traded, direction (long or short), lot size, entry price, exit price, risk/reward ratio, net P&L, setup or playbook name, session, and trade notes. Together these fields let you identify patterns across symbols, sessions, strategies and time periods that are invisible in raw P&L alone.
A spreadsheet journal works if you fill it in consistently — but most traders do not. Manual entry takes 5–15 minutes per trade, errors creep in over time, and journals are typically abandoned during losing streaks — exactly when the data is most valuable. Automated journaling removes the friction entirely.
